Hong Kong has been a favorite Asian destination for a long time, and there is so much on offer that it is easy to see why that might be the case. If you have never been to this sprawling city, you might be amazed on your first visit just how much there is going on here. It receives something in the region of 25 million visitors every year, and this number coupled with the huge amounts of native residents means that it is one of the busiest places on Earth.

It is also one of the most enjoyable as a tourist. You can’t really explore Asia without spending some time in Hong Kong, and it is likely that you will find it to be one of the most exciting and unique cities there are. It is a world financial capital, despite its relatively small stature in size, and it is known for being inhabited by very friendly locals who are generally extremely welcoming indeed. If you are looking for an easy time while travleling, you could do much worse than visit Hong Kong.

As with many cities around the world, Hong Kong is great for its nightlife, and for eating out. No matter what kind of cuisine you are really into, you can be sure to find plenty of it in this sprawling city – and all within reach by the harbour too. This is quite simply a must-visit for anyone keen on experiencing Asia to its fullest.

Singapore

The fifth most visited city in the world, and second most in the continent of Asia, this is one city which you would rather not miss out on. Singapore is up there with Hong Kong as being one of the most famously extravagant cities in the world, and it is the kind of destination that tourists always go crazy for. If you are willing to visit the best places in Asia, Singapore is likely to be at the top of your list. But what exactly is it that makes Singapore such a must-see Asian destination?

For a start, there is the history. This is one of the most varied and fascinating historical locations anywhere in the world, and anyone who has even the slightest interest in architecture history will find it a hugely fascinating place to visit. You have a fantastic combination of the old and the new side by side, and that’s not to mention some of the really modern buildings that you are likely to see. A richly historic city, the endlessly interesting history can be seen equally in Singapore houses as in the world-famous skyscrapers.

If you are someone who is concerned with travelling in a green, environmentally friendly and above-board kind of way, then Singapore has to be on your list. More than many other cities in Asia, and many in the world, it is routinely praised for its clean and green approach to living. This is something you don’t see in cities very often, so it can be quite refreshing when you are looking for something to restore your faith in humanity. What’s more, it is also known as being one of the safer places to visit in all of Asia, and that is a big concern for any traveller or tourist of this part of the world.

Above all, in Singapore you can expect to witness and be part of a genuine melting pot of diversity and fascinating culture. There are few places in the world which tend to offer quite this level of real-world culture all in one amazing and breathtaking city.

Bangkok

The Thai people are known the world over as being incredibly polite, even professional, and keen to please their guests. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in the capital city, Bangkok. This city has been a favorite tourist destination for many years now, and it has become the first name in all things raucous and energetic. If you are travelling southeast Asia and you want real nightlife like you can’t get anywhere else, then Bangkok is the one to go for. Yet, even while being able to enjoy long nights out in the streets, you can still feel pretty safe for most of it, as Bangkok is one of Asia’s safest cities.

It also happens to be incredibly tourist-friendly, and wandering the streets of Sambuttri in particular will make you feel at home in moments. The Thai people are eager to keep you happy, and you will find that you are unlikely to get bored very quick what with all the pubs, bars, restaurants and nightclubs in town. Though sometimes seen as a seedier city, there are aspects in which Bangkok is also hugely entertaining and enjoyable.

The most enjoyable time to visit this city has to be during Songkran, the Thai new year festival. During this time, you can expect to experience a huge water fight the likes of which you have never seen in your life, as the entire city becomes armed with super-soakers and Thais drop buckets of ice water onto you from top floor windows. It is a crazy – and very wet – free-for-all, and it’s one of the best times you will have in your life.

A visit to Bangkok will leave you feeling exhausted and refreshed, and with a huge grin on your face – and you will come away feeling that you’d like to see much more of Asia as well.

Tokyo

Tokyo

If you don’t mind the crowds, Tokyo is likely to be the kind of place you would love to visit – and tell people about for years to come. For the foodies out there, it happens to be one of the world’s top food destinations, and it is often able to provide you with a great many different kinds of cuisines. No matter what you like to eat, you’ll find it – and plenty of it – in Japan’s capital city. Of course, there is more to travelling than just food, so the question is: does Tokyo offer more besides?

The answer has to be a resounding yes. As a busy and lively hub of activity, it is the kind of place not for the faint-hearted, but a visit to Tokyo will give you an experience unlike anywhere else in the world. In many respects, it is like the ultimate city – in the way that it has a little bit of all the aspects of a city which you would hope for. Whether you want to eat (see above), go out for the night dancing, go shopping, you will find that Tokyo is one of the best places in the world to do it all. It is on the pricier end of the Asian city scale, and with that and its incredible business you might find hat a shorter stay is all you need. But a visit to Tokyo is essential if you want to really feel as though you have had a taste of the fullness of travelling around Asia. It is the kind of city you will never forget about as long as you live.

Beijing

The Chinese capital of Beijing is not quite as often mentioned as the previous cities, but it remains one of the very top Asian city destinations anywhere. The real beauty of Beijing, and something which you might not get to quite the same degree in other Asian cities, is the way in which you feel like you are landed in the genuine culture and history of the country itself. While in many Asian cities you get the feeling of being in a bustling modern metropolitan, Beijing will not make you feel this way – but therein lies its true charm. In some respects, you will find it harder to get around than in many other Asian cities, what with nobody local speaking anything other than their own language, but it is exactly this which makes it a true traveller’s dream come true. If you are looking for a slice of real China, and real Asia, then Beijing can probably provide it for you in spades.

Visiting the major cities of Asia is bound to give you a great sense of fulfilment. Consider all of the above if you want to visit some of the best-loved cities, and see what the fuss is really all about for yourself.

  1. Hong Kong is a whole vibe, bro! From insane skyline views at Victoria Peak to late-night munchies in Mong Kok – this city never sleeps! The energy here hits different, and don’t even get me started on the street food. Plus, that blend of old-school temples and futuristic cityscapes is a next-level flex! 10/10 would come back just to vibe with the neon lights and hustle.

  2. Thanks for adding my country Singapore to the list! 🙂 It appears that tourists are flocking to all these stereotypical Asian destinations that few of them are willing to take the off-the-beaten track to visit other more exotic countries like Myanmar and Laos. I really enjoyed my time in Laos where I had an authentic travel experience which wasn’t pre-packaged or overly commercialised, so the whole trip felt very ‘real’ and that was something I had never felt before on my travels.

  3. Out of all these cities, I have only got a chance to visit the beautiful Singapore and must say it was a very pleasant experience. Though all of the se places are on my list, but I am most keen to explore Japan first.

  4. Really nice list of cities. Sadly I’m yet to visit any of them. I might also add Dubai, Delhi and Manila to the list though as they are every bit as amazing and offer very diverse experiences to the visitor.

  5. I loved Tokyo because of the food and energy! It reminds me of my hometown of NYC! But I’ve never been to other Asian countries. Hong Kong is definitely on the top of my list!

  6. During our next offseason I plan on traveling to Asia and exploring as much as possible. This post was a perfect guideline for where to start. I have heard nothing but amazing things about Asia and cannot wait to experience it for myself. Bangkok and Singapore are both on my top five. Glad to know they are both safe and green!!

    Thank you 🙂

  7. I’ve been to many of these cities but I have to say Tokyo was my favorite. There is so much life and energy in the city and so many interesting things to look at. Hopefully, Singapore will be next!
